Storytelling and MMC
Make Me Care (MMC).
These are just my own observations, but MMC seems to be the “secret” to great art, books, films, etc.
It has been said that your job as an artist is to simply evoke emotions and feelings already present in the viewer.
Why? Because then the viewer is emotionally invested in your piece.
Put simply: they care.
The same goes for storytelling.
You don’t need to explain everything well, you just need to explain the right things well.
Present the right things and let the audience figure out the rest themselves. Give clues and let them figure it out.
Our imagination is way more powerful than anything we could put in front of our viewers in detail. So, if you want to have something impactful, suggest just enough and leave the rest to the audience’s own imagination.
Again, because then they are drawn into the story and care.
One of the most common mistakes of beginner artists is to draw everything. More detail does not mean a more realistic or pleasing artwork.
Continuous talking during a speech doesn’t make nearly the amount of impact as when a speaker takes pauses to let what was said sink in.
We ought to be critical about what not to include as we are thinking about what to include.
If music is the silence between the notes;
Art and writing are the suggestion of the strokes.
The best of each are the thoughts they provoke.
All creativity is communication: use it wisely.
