How to donate items for disaster relief
A few weeks ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve one of the communities in North Carolina affected by the destructive flooding of hurricane Helene.
Having volunteered at one of the distributions centers, I saw firsthand the donation and distribution of items for hurricane Helene relief. I thought I would share my notes on some things I learned, both for others and for my own future reference.
When Donating Things
In the weeks following after people’s homes were destroyed by the flooding, there was a serious need for food and clothing. Thus, when donating, try to prioritize food and clothing over other items.
Clothing:
- Try to think practically. Better to donate boots and shirts than high heels and princess dresses. :)
- It is better to donate new items, but if you donate gently used items, mark the sizes and put them in plastic bags.
- Remove the barcode from any new items.
Other Items:
- Trash bags are used for so many things during distribution, cleanup, etc. Is there a such thing as having too many, especially in a disaster relief zone?
- While plastic bags or bins with portioned snacks and toys is a wonderful idea, it is best to make sure that you do it in such a way that is useful for distribution. It might be best to send them along with someone you know will be able to get them directly to people.
Based on what I seen in terms of what people needed, if you think practically when donating you’ll be a really great blessing.
On behalf of those who were affected by the hurricane, thank you to all who donated. You have made a difference in the lives of these people, and I’m sure they won’t soon forget it.
