Manage energy not time
I once listened to an interview with an artist, and they had what I thought was a good take on “time management” or, more correctly, “energy management”.
Their main point was to focus on managing energy, not time. You can’t manage time; it passes no matter what you do.
Like a bucket, you are filled with a set amount of energy per day. You have to choose how you use the limited energy you have. Some tasks may not take very much time, but they do take a lot of energy.
If we’re not careful, we can use our energy on small but demanding tasks and have no energy for the things we really need/want to do to move forward in life.
A good way to live is to have ONE priority per day. Your priority should help you get closer to reaching your life goals.
Find your focus time and work on your priority. Everyone has a time during which they work best in the day. Find out when it is (for me, it’s the morning) and reserve it for your one priority task only.
If there is something taking energy away from your priority and thus your goals, cut it. If you are unable to cut it out of your life, try moving it to a time outside your focus time.
Health and mental wellness aren’t a priority. (Don’t take the last sentence out of context!) They aren’t in your priorities because they should be continuous given rather than an optional task that you can “prioritize” or not.
It’s also good to ask yourself if every other decision (even the small ones) is getting you closer to your goals. If it’s not, it could be draining your energy, even if it’s not a time-sink.
