Please don't posture like this
So, a while ago I received a bad 1-star review from a user of one of my apps simply because I happen to have a Russian translation in the app.
I think this is really silly and sad. Regardless of the political side of things, posturing like this is a very low blow in my eyes.
The reviewer assumed I (as an American) and all Russians automatically agree with everything going on in Russia. Far worse, they assumed that getting upset because there happens to be a Russian translation in an app totally unrelated is helping the cause. They also failed to take into account that perhaps the Russian translation existed before things went south, for example.
This might be the worst form of posturing, because it’s not based on facts and gets the person thinking they “did” something when really they’ve turned themselves into the kind of hurtful, messed-up person they believe they’re fighting against.
It’s sad to me, not because of the 1-star review or anything personal, but because this shows how we can justify our own unkind posturing by pointing the finger with blanket statements and somehow feel good about ourselves.
So, I guess that’s something I’m thinking about: where in my life am I thinking that what I’m doing is helping when really it’s just posturing for the sake of feeling good?
