Passion without discipline is not much
Based on my experiences and reading, passion without discipline is not much at all.
You can have a passion for writing, for instance, but unless you’re disciplined about sitting down and writing—both to improve and work on real projects—then you will likely hardly ever write. If you do, it will be only writing the things you find easiest to write, often meaning you won’t really stretch to improve your skills. You’ll also likely have a really hard time finishing any projects because passion by itself tends to “leave” when things get really difficult. (Usually about halfway through. Ask me how I know…)
Passion is a terrible decision filter… It is based on emotions and feelings, which are undeniably fickle. If you’re letting your feelings drive your car, you’re in trouble, because feelings are the worst driver in the world.
Passion tells you to do only the things that you find fun and interesting. But every project has parts that are difficult and not fun or interesting.
One cannot rely on passion to get you through these tough spots. It is too easy to use passion as an excuse to avoid discomfort.
Passion itself is vague and it doesn’t do anything on its own. Only if you pair it with discipline to act on that passion does it result in something tangible.
