Parallels of Passover and the Messiah
The Messiah is referred to as the Passover lamb many times in Scripture:
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed the Messiah, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
1 Corinthians 5:7
The next day John saw Yahushua coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of Yahweh who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29 (NKJV)
Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, [like] silver or gold, from your aimless conduct [received] by tradition from your fathers, 19 – but with the precious blood of the Messiah, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
1 Peter 1:18 (NKJV)
Then He said to them, “With [fervent] desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 – for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of Yahweh.” 17 – Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide [it] among yourselves; 18 – for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of Yahweh comes.” 19 – And He took bread, gave thanks and broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Luke 22:15 (NKJV)
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 – He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 – And they made His grave with the wicked–But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor [was] [any] deceit in His mouth.
Isaiah 53:7-9
Yahushua the Messiah is “our Passover”.
The physical Passover lamb has always been/still is a symbol of the Messiah who shed His blood for us. Just like baptism doesn’t actually “clean” us—the Messiah does—but is an outward symbol to others of what He has done to cleanse us inside.
Only those who are physically circumcised could eat the physical Passover lamb. Likewise, only those who are circumcised spiritually can eat of the bread and fruit of the vine representing the Messiah’s body and blood.
The feasts are given as a memorial. Passover is remembering how Yahweh delivered us from bondage to sin (Egypt). The Messiah was sacrificed for us (the Lamb) at Passover.
It’s really amazing all the parallels. :)
